and Despair

I can't help but to despair for the state of our planet and our society and human kind in general when I watch the news (which admittedly I don't do very often) and discover that on the first headline we hear how various oil companies have announced that they have made staggering profits such as: Shell $27.56 billion -annual profit. The following news item was on the World Food Crisis and the estimation that somewhere in the region of $1.4 billion would be needed in order to prevent a seemingly inescapable disaster of starvation world wide.

How is it that we as a race are capable of such extremes? How can one country or peoples earn so much money, so much profit and see the atrocities that float by on their screens everyday and not say 'You know what, we can do without that $1,4 billion, we'll donate it to a good cause and make our world a better place. We'll feed all those hungry people and by next year we'll have earned all that money back anyway.'

How is this even possible?

More and more lately I have been so ashamed of what we have become, of what we are and the legacy we are leaving for our children and the future generations. I feel that the 'good' people of this world are simply dwarfed by those super-powers that want nothing more than to earn for their own personal gain and do nothing for the future, for the community, society or the very planet that we have been blessed to live on.

I don't really know why I'm writing this, or posting it into the internet oblivion, I guess because some part of me hopes that maybe somehow people will read this and appreciate and agree with what I'm saying.

Something needs to be done, how can we carrying on living like this? I don't know what one person can do about it, or even 100's, but surely we can't sit and watch all this happen and not try and at least go down without a fight, I get the impression that the ship is sinking and I'd rather go down screaming for our rights as a human being and fighting for what is right and just than sitting down with the water lapping around my ankles waiting for someone else to do something.

Rant over. :sniff:

Please comment and discuss, I'd love to hear that I'm not the only one that feels these things.

Oh my I didn't realize Shell made that much money. Yep it's a sad disgrace that rich people keep getting richer while the poor people are getting no help whatsoever :(

Peace
I totally agree with you. But - I'd just like to make a few points (I used to work in the oil industry and feel a vague need to stand up for them LOL):

1) Oil companies run cyclically. Some years they make huge profits, some years they make very little, though the prices seen in the last year or so are remarkable even at the high point of the cycle.

2) Oil companies actually have little influence on oil prices or markets. OPEC has much more of an effect, as do market sentiment and political situations. If you want to blame people, look beyond the oil companies.

3) Oil companies generally can't pump their profits back to us in the ways you would automatically expect. They cannot generally lower pump prices dramatically even though that may seem to make sense to us.

Oil companies take a lot of the blame, but there is much more behind them.

I see your point and thankyou for sharing that information. I realize that there are a lot of other 'higher' powers to blame in this situation and it is not just one company at fault it is a whole world ethic and viewpoint that needs to change if we are to move forward as a race. Thanks for commenting.

I completely agree with you. It is absolutely despicable what these corporations have done and continue to do. And it's not just oil companies. Every large industry seems to care very little about the well being of the individual or even society as a whole. They don't even seem to realize [or care] that if they destroy the Earth [slowly or otherwise], all of their money would mean nothing. And then, to go even further, most people in general seem to have lost touch with what it means to be a good person and live a good life. They are so disconnected and ruthless. My professor actually told me yesterday that I "had to be selfish" because that was the only way I was going to make it in this world. How sad is that?? I have tried very hard not to become cynical, but everywhere I turn it seems that money and getting ahead [no matter the cost] is the only thing that matters.

I agree with you. It is very frustrating and depressing. And I'm not sure what we few can do to change anything, but I sure as hell would rather go down fighting. I would definitely rather go down being a good person and trying to better this world than just sitting around moping. And even if nothing changes, at least we never lost hope. :)

sorry for the long reply  I'm a writer if you couldn't tell. But keep up the great journals!!

I thought Olympic Games then I thought "that can't be it"...

End of the World? Third World Debt being written off forever?

How is it that individuals can owe money to creditors (banks, loan companies, store cards, energy suppliers, etc..) and eventually those debts will no longer be chased (i.e. after 6 years an overdraft debt cannot be demanded by a bank and gets effectively written off) and countries have to pay their debts?

The Third World needs to have that debt erased. And then maybe (caution: controversy ahead) no more loan will be offered to them so as to avoid the old situation arising again.

It is very simple and yet complicated to look at the relation between production, profit and humanism. I wish everyone would feel solidarity regardless of differences. Unfortunately it isn't (yet?) the case. Luckily there are still people to feel outraged by this and, like you, call out for action, rather than inaction.

Maybe you could participate in =karemelancholia's Solidarity Contest? I'm not sure in what way though... I'm still pondering on which cause I want to raise awareness and funds for myself.
